Behold! We have entered the land of the Rosé Cocktail! Rosé all day? Yes please! Mix it up and make a boozier version? Even better! If you’re a rosé lover like me then you can understand my excitement. Sure, nothing can top a crisp, fresh glass of cold rosé on a hot day, but its always nice to spice things up a bit.
For this post, I’m going to keep it classy and take a look back at a historical French cocktail, to serve as inspiration for my Rosé version, the classic, Soixante Quinze (French 75).
The French 75 was born out of “a desire to drink Champagne from a group of army men off duty, wanting to indulge in the bubbly but looking for something stronger, so they added gin” (that’s perhaps a made up elaboration from my dreamer cocktail man). The more accurate version is that a version of the drink dates back to the 19th century, where the “Champagne cup” was often imbibed, a mixture of champagne, lemon juice, sugar, and ice, with gin being commonly added. The official French 75 cocktail came to be in the early to late 1920’s via bar introductions and media promotion.
Now, I’m sure there is much more to this tale, I recite a mashup of a story my mixologist boyfriend once told and some facts I found on Wikipedia. But, the history is there, so no matter where you are to enjoy it, the flavors of 1920’s Paris will surely get you dancing in a revêrie all night!
But let's give a 2017 twist to this iconic cocktail! To do so, let's add some rosé to the mix.
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/2 oz simple syrup (hot water and sweetener)
Sparkling Brut Rosé (no dosage on this one)
Shake with ice and pour into chilled champagne flute. Fill to brim with Sparkling Rosé, I recommend a dry, Brut, as the lemon and sugar will add all the necessary sweetness for the drink. You can also replace the lemon zest for decoration with a edible flower.
