Balenciaga: L'Oeuvre au Noir Exhibit

An exhibition on Balenciaga's dark creations

Black: sleek, classic, edgy…. The list can go on about the power of “the little black dress”, the all black city staple, the go-to for elegant movie stars. But the one thing that doesn’t come to mind is plain or simple when talking about Paris’ Palais Galliera’s current exhibition showcasing Cristobal Balenciaga’s collection of black looks.  You will find a range of pieces from crepe-like cake dresses to long ball-gowns that look covered in glowing stars to sleek cocktail dresses that could take you anywhere and casual day-outfits that might make others question if all you really did was go grocery shopping.

Walking through the exhibit you will find larger than life glass cases elegantly displaying each carefully crafted Balenciaga design, with the cases themselves designed to mimic the clean cuts and lines that the famous haute couture master is known for manipulating so precisely and creatively. Gazing through these cases, however, you will be faced with the many sculptures laden throughout the Musée Bourdelle’s sculpture garden, a mashup of art that exudes a peaceful harmony and a present to the eyes; the hardness of the rock that still looks as soft as fabric while the real fabric beside it gains a strength in its crisp edges and calculated folds.  With varied materials and fabrics, playing with weight, light, occasion, and of course the play of the surroundings, Balenciaga’s Collection in Noir will make your jaw drop in awe and respect, and perhaps a bit of longing to have your own Balenciaga hanging in the closet at home.
